ELEMENTS

there are 4 primary elements used in magickal workings: earth, air, fire, and water

MAGICK WITH A "K"

no that's not a misspelling - I use magick with a "k" to refer to the spiritual practice of magick (as opposed to magic tricks such as pulling a rabbit out of a hat)

MAJOR ARCANA

the first 22 cards in a typical tarot deck; these cards stand alone and do not belong to any of the suits; when these cards appear in a reading it can indicate that strong influences are at work

MINOR ARCANA

the remaining 56 cards in a typical tarot deck comprised of 4 suits: cups, swords, wands, and pentacles (or a variation of any of these i.e. rods instead of wands, disks instead of pentacles, etc.); each suit has cards 1-10, an ace, and 4 court cards

PALO SANTO

Mexican holy wood; some of the purposes of burning palo santo include purification and protection

PENDULUM

a tool used for divination: a pendant suspended from a chain, often made from crystal, stone, or metal

QUERENT

the person asking a question during a tarot reading

RIDER WAITE SMITH (RWS)

the 1910 tarot deck illustrated by Pamela Coleman Smith; one of the most widespread and well known decks available; many modern decks are designed around the RWS and have similar imagery and corresponding card meanings

SABBAT

holiday or festival during which rituals may be preformed and celebrations may take place

SAGE

a sacred herb frequently used for cleansing or during prayer

SIGNIFICATOR

a card chosen prior to a tarot reading, selected to represent the person or situation in question

SPREAD

the designated position of cards during a tarot reading; one of the most common spreads for a reading is the Celtic Cross

TAROT DE MARSEILLE (TDM)

one of the oldest versions of the tarot as we know it; first used in Europe it is unknown for sure when it originally appeared, but likely between the 15th and 17th century

THOTH OR CROWLEY TAROT

tarot deck designed by occultist Aleister Crowley and illustrated by Lady Frieda Harris published in 1969; this deck varies significantly from the RWS and TDM; there are several modern Thoth-based decks available
